How to cancel a hard-to-cancel subscription
Steps that work, and what to do if a company keeps charging you.
Some companies make cancelling much harder than signing up. These steps usually work, and you have options if charges continue.
Steps
- Look for the cancel option in your account settings, or in your phone's app store subscriptions
- If there's none, use chat or phone and ask clearly to cancel; decline offers if you don't want them
- Ask for a confirmation number or email and save it
- Check your next statement
If they keep charging
- Contact the company in writing with your cancellation confirmation
- Dispute the charge with your card issuer
- Some states require companies to let you cancel online if you signed up online
- You can report problems to the FTC and your state attorney general
